Seven people, including two police officers, were killed in a collision involving a police vehicle and a Volkswagen Passat on the A66 near Middlesbrough early on August 22, 2026, Cleveland Police said.

The crash occurred at about 3:39 a.m. in South Bank, North Yorkshire. The Independent Office for Police Conduct said officers had spotted a vehicle they considered suspicious and a pursuit began before that vehicle entered the A66 and collided with a police car.

The watchdog opened an investigation after a mandatory referral from Cleveland Police. Investigators were sent to examine evidence and establish the circumstances surrounding the collision.

The North East Ambulance Service deployed 14 units, including ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a hazardous-area response team and an air-ambulance doctor. The A66 was closed in both directions between Normanby Road and Church Lane in Eston as emergency work and the investigation continued.

Authorities said they were working to identify the victims and notify their families. Officials urged the public to avoid speculation while the inquiry remained under way.
