The United Nations has allocated $8.5 million from its Central Emergency Response Fund for humanitarian assistance and civilian protection in Ethiopia, with support intended for more than 202,700 people.

Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher announced the allocation on 13 October 2026. A UN statement issued on 14 October confirmed the funding, which was also reported by The Reporter Ethiopia.

The response will cover Tigray, Amhara, Afar and Benishangul-Gumuz, alongside other areas with acute needs. Priority groups include people displaced for the first time or repeatedly, communities whose essential services have been interrupted, and places with limited capacity to deliver assistance.

The money will support water and sanitation, shelter, health, nutrition and protection services, as well as services shared by humanitarian organisations. It is intended to complement work already being carried out by the government and aid partners.

The allocation brings CERF support for Ethiopia in 2026 to more than $22.5 million, according to the UN. That total also includes anticipatory assistance for dry conditions in Afar and Amhara. The announced beneficiary figure describes the planned reach of the funding; it does not establish that assistance has already reached those people.
