Virgin Trains has received regulatory approval to operate cross-Channel passenger services from London to Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam beginning in 2030.

Britain’s Office of Rail and Road approved access for as many as 20 daily return services through the Channel Tunnel, according to The Guardian. The decision advances Virgin’s plan to challenge Eurostar’s passenger monopoly on the route.

The approval is an important regulatory step, but service launch remains several years away. The operator will still need to complete the operational preparations required to begin carrying passengers on the planned timetable.
