- The African Union Commission called on Ethiopia, Eritrea and Egypt to exercise restraint in a 1 October 2026 statement and offered support for dialogue.

The African Union Commission has urged Ethiopia, Eritrea and Egypt to avoid further escalation and maintain diplomatic communication, offering to support efforts to resolve their differences peacefully.
In a statement dated 1 October 2026, the commission expressed concern about heightened tensions among the three member states. It appealed to them to refrain from actions and public statements that could worsen the situation or threaten regional stability.
The commission called for disputes to be addressed through established diplomatic channels and dialogue consistent with the African Union’s founding principles. Any AU support for de-escalation would be pursued in consultation with the countries concerned, it said.
The statement is an offer of diplomatic assistance. It does not announce agreed negotiations, a meeting date or a settlement among the three governments, and it does not assign responsibility for the tensions.
Horn Diplomat’s report, carried by AllAfrica on 2 October 2026, brought the appeal into the source queue. The underlying AU statement was issued on 1 October.
