ARIA, the industry body that operates the weekly national charts, updated its chart code to make wholly AI-generated recordings ineligible. The change is due to take effect on Friday, August 28, 2026.
The rule targets music generated entirely by AI rather than every recording that uses artificial-intelligence tools somewhere in production. Its practical effect is to preserve chart eligibility for music with human creative participation while excluding fully synthetic releases.
The change places Australia’s recording industry among institutions drawing a formal distinction between AI-assisted work and content generated without human artistry. The policy also adds a new gatekeeping question for chart administrators as generative tools become more capable of producing complete songs.
ARIA’s action was reported by Variety on August 25, 2026. Further implementation details will depend on the association’s chart code and how it assesses disputed releases.
