Davis, 63, was convicted after a two-week trial. Prosecutors argued that the former South Side Compton Crips leader directed the effort to kill Shakur in retaliation for a fight involving the musician and Davis’s nephew, Orlando Anderson. Variety reported that the verdict included the use of a deadly weapon with intent to promote, further or assist a criminal gang.
The verdict marks the first criminal conviction in one of the music industry’s most closely followed unsolved killings. Shakur was shot in Las Vegas in September 1996 and died days later at age 25.
Davis now faces sentencing. The conviction was reported independently by Al Jazeera, Variety and The Guardian.
