Five Wounded in Shooting at Virginia State University

Five people were wounded in a shooting near student housing at Virginia State University early on Saturday, August 15, 2026, prompting a campus lockdown and a multi-agency police response.

Chesterfield County police said officers found five people with gunshot wounds outside dormitories after being called at about 1:30 a.m. One victim initially described as having life-threatening injuries was later listed in critical condition. The other four sustained injuries that authorities said were not life-threatening.

The university said the incident involved multiple suspects. Police asked people to avoid the Quad Annexes area while investigators worked at the scene. Several suspects remained at large in the initial hours after the shooting.

Virginia State University is a public institution about 32 kilometres south of Richmond with roughly 5,700 students. The shooting occurred shortly before classes were scheduled to begin on Monday, after residence halls had reopened for the new academic year.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and other local law-enforcement agencies assisted the investigation. Authorities had not announced arrests or a motive in the initial reports.
