- An additional €4 million and a 2030 completion target are proposed for the Addis Ababa palace restoration, but financing remains unconfirmed.

Restoration of Addis Ababa’s Genete Leul Palace could expand to an €8 million project if Italian authorities approve additional funding, The Reporter reported on October 10, 2026.
The newspaper cited Institute of Ethiopian Studies executive director Yohannes Adgeh as saying technical assessments identified more extensive structural work than initially expected. The Polytechnic University of Turin has proposed another €4 million and a completion target of 2030, replacing the original 2027 target.
The existing project is supported by a €4 million grant from the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation. The supplementary financing remains unconfirmed.
The report said tendering for the first restoration lot began on October 8, 2026. Work is intended to address foundation and roof damage at the building, which houses Addis Ababa University’s Institute of Ethiopian Studies and ethnographic museum. Collections would move temporarily to the institute’s library when construction affects museum areas.
