Jamaica has sent a delegation led by Culture Minister Olivia Grange to Britain ahead of a slavery reparations petition scheduled to be filed with King Charles III on September 7, 2026.
The petition asks Charles, acting as Jamaica’s head of state, to refer three questions about the enslavement of Africans in Jamaica to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. Jamaica’s culture ministry said in a September 4 statement that the petition seeks legal consideration and does not itself demand payment.
The visit brings together representatives of the attorney general’s office, the National Council on Reparations and the ministry. It forms part of Jamaica’s effort to advance its reparations claim through a legal process.
Grange’s programme also includes discussions with the British Museum about returning Jamaican artefacts taken during the colonial period. The ministry scheduled a remembrance service in south London for September 6.
The announced filing date remains a scheduled step: the available reports do not establish that the petition has already been lodged or that Charles has agreed to refer the questions.
