Japan has selected filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s “All of a Sudden” as its submission for the international feature film category at the 99th Academy Awards.
The Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan, known as Eiren, announced the selection, according to entertainment industry publication Variety. The decision puts the film forward as Japan’s official contender; it does not by itself guarantee a nomination, which will be determined through the Academy Awards selection process.
The submission marks the second time a Hamaguchi film has represented Japan in the category. His earlier film “Drive My Car” went on to win the international feature Oscar five years ago.
Japan’s choice adds “All of a Sudden” to the field of national submissions competing for a place on the Academy’s shortlist and, later, among the final nominees for the 2027 ceremony.
