Michigan authorities say a man fatally shot his wife and six children before setting fire to their home and dying by suicide; investigators have not established a public motive.
Authorities in Michigan have identified a man they say killed his wife and six children before setting fire to the family home and dying by suicide.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said autopsy findings showed that Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, his wife Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39, and their six children died from gunshot wounds. The children were between five and 15 years old. Investigators said the deaths occurred before the family’s home in Grand Haven Township burned on Friday, July 24, 2026.
According to the sheriff’s office, evidence indicates the fire was deliberately started in several parts of the house after the shootings. Authorities said they were still investigating where the blaze began and what led to the violence. They have not released the children’s names and said they are not seeking a suspect outside the household.
Emergency personnel first investigated a report of a smoky smell near the home on Friday morning but found nothing. They returned about three hours later after additional reports, entered the burning property and found the bodies. The family’s pets also died in the fire.
Sheriff Eric DeBoer described the deaths as an unspeakable tragedy. Relatives remembered Amanda Karolkiewicz, who worked as a substitute elementary-school teacher, as devoted to her family and students.
Authorities classified the case as a murder-suicide and said the investigation remains open. No motive has been established publicly.
