Monty Don to leave Gardeners’ World at end of current series

Monty Don will leave Gardeners’ World at the end of its current series, the BBC announced on September 8, 2026, bringing his long association as the programme’s lead gardening presenter to a close.

Don said he had decided the time had come to move on after 23 years and roughly 700 programmes. His final series will continue airing later in 2026, according to The Guardian’s report of the announcement.

The departure does not end his work with the BBC. Don plans to continue other programmes for the broadcaster and pursue projects including books.

Since 2011, viewers have followed his gardening work at Longmeadow, his home garden in Herefordshire. That setting became a familiar part of the series, connecting practical advice with the changing seasons in a working garden.

BBC chief content officer Kate Phillips praised his ability to engage viewers and share his enthusiasm for gardening. Series editor Sharon Fisher, who has worked with him for two decades, also paid tribute to his contribution to the programme and its audience.

The announcement concerns Don’s departure after the current series, rather than an immediate end to his appearances.
