Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks said officers were still working to establish the exact number of casualties, identify the shooter and determine a motive. Authorities were notifying relatives before releasing further details.
Police said the incident unfolded near a busy shopping area where hundreds of people were present. Witnesses described seeing a person carrying an AR-style rifle and hearing several shots. One witness also reported that another armed person fired at the shooter, but officials had not publicly confirmed the full sequence of events.
Hicks said investigators believed the threat to the community had ended. Multiple law-enforcement agencies responded, roads around the scene were closed, and police appealed for witnesses to provide information.
Twin Falls is a city of about 56,000 people in southern Idaho, roughly 205 kilometres southeast of Boise. The investigation remained active early on August 2, and officials had not released the victims’ identities.
