Nepal flood missing count rises to 1,924 as confirmed deaths reach 584

Nepal’s disaster authority said on Friday, August 28, 2026, that 1,924 people were missing after the flash floods along the Nepal-Tibet border, a rise of more than 400 from the previous count. Authorities had confirmed 584 deaths in Nepal, while five deaths were reported in Tibet.

The sharp revision represents a substantial new development in a disaster whose toll has continued to change as officials gather information from affected areas. Earlier AddisMizan coverage recorded lower missing-person totals as rescue efforts were interrupted and later resumed.

The Nepali army was also working to reach more than 100 people trapped in a tunnel at a hydropower project inundated by Wednesday’s flooding. Army spokesperson Raja Ram Basnet said two helicopters had been dispatched, but locating the tunnel entrances was difficult. Relief operations were continuing for people already rescued.

The figures remain provisional while search and rescue work continues. The rising count of missing people does not by itself establish additional deaths, and authorities may revise the totals as people are located or reports are reconciled.
