A North Gondar Zone administration report cited by The Reporter says more than 8,200 hectares of farmland have dried up and at least 7,300 livestock have died because of shortages of water and fodder. Officials estimate that nearly 100,000 people need food support. The figures have not been independently verified by AddisMizan.
Administrators of Simien Mountains National Park are preparing to supply fresh grass to livestock in surrounding communities after receiving a request from zonal agriculture and livestock offices. Park administrator Mehari Beyadglign said grass would be cut only at times and in ways intended to avoid disturbing wildlife.
Local authorities are seeking federal humanitarian assistance, including 4,500 tonnes of grain and 125,000 litres of cooking oil. They are also requesting education materials and support intended to prevent drought-related declines in school enrolment over the next 10 months.
