A powerful earthquake struck Panama on 9 October 2026, prompting evacuations and reports of damage to buildings and roads. The US Geological Survey’s reviewed record lists the main shock at magnitude 7.7, near Pitaloza Arriba, at 17:56 UTC, or 12:56 p.m. in Panama.

Early estimates changed as seismic data were assessed. The Guardian’s report used magnitude 7.6; the later USGS record lists 7.7. Additional strong shaking and aftershocks followed.

The Guardian reported damage in central provinces, including a partial collapse and cracks at the cathedral in Penonomé. It cited National Civil Protection Service official Omar Smith as saying several injuries had been reported. A comprehensive casualty assessment was not available in that report.

Tsunami warnings were issued after the earthquake. Warning information changed during the day, so those initial notices should not be treated as a statement of current coastal risk.

Tocumen international airport said it temporarily suspended operations for safety checks, according to the Guardian. The Panama Canal Authority said canal operations were continuing normally while technical teams inspected facilities.
