The International Committee of the Red Cross has confirmed that its Myanmar representative met detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi in Naypyidaw on Monday, August 3, 2026, after years of uncertainty about her whereabouts and health.
The ICRC said the visit followed its procedures for meeting people deprived of liberty and included an opportunity to speak with her in private. It said any observations and recommendations from the meeting would remain confidential and be shared with the detaining authorities.
Myanmar authorities released photographs showing the 81-year-old former state counsellor with ICRC resident representative Arnaud de Baecque. The images were the first new publicly released photographs of her since the military removed her elected government in the February 2021 coup.
Aung San Suu Kyi has been largely isolated from independent visitors since her detention. Her son, Kim Aris, welcomed the meeting as an initial step while calling for continued humanitarian access, direct family contact and her release alongside other political prisoners.
