At least 12 people were killed in overnight Russian attacks across Ukraine on September 1, 2026, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He said an Indian citizen was among those killed and that dozens of other people were injured.
The attacks affected several parts of the country. Zelenskyy said thousands of families lost electricity in the Odesa region and that a border crossing with Romania was deliberately damaged. In the Kyiv region, a missile strike damaged an apartment building in Boryspil.
The latest assault followed several days of sustained attacks, with Kyiv targeted for six consecutive days. Ukraine's air force also said Russia launched more than 2,800 jet-powered drones during August. Air force spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat said about 60% of those drones were intercepted, a lower rate than for other drone types.
The strikes came as European Union defence ministers met in Wicklow, Ireland, with support for Ukraine and European security among the main items on their agenda. The casualty figures and damage assessments may change as authorities continue their response.
