US visual-effects workers employed directly on several Star Wars productions have joined the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees for collective bargaining.
A group of US visual-effects workers employed directly on Star Wars productions has joined the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, creating a new collective-bargaining unit within the franchise’s production workforce.
Variety reported on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, that the unit includes workers contributing to titles such as The Mandalorian & Grogu, Ahsoka and Starfighter. The employees voted overwhelmingly to affiliate with IATSE.
The move gives the participating workers a formal route to negotiate collectively over employment terms. It applies to visual-effects staff engaged directly by the productions, rather than every artist working through outside vendors.
The organizing effort is part of a broader push by visual-effects professionals to secure union representation in a sector where work is frequently divided among studios, production companies and specialist contractors.
