The milestone, reported on August 10, 2026, puts the film ahead of Nolan's previous record-holder, “The Dark Knight Rises,” which earned $1.085 billion globally. “The Dark Knight” grossed $1.005 billion.
Released on July 17, the adaptation of Homer's epic follows Odysseus on his decade-long journey home after the Trojan War. Matt Damon leads a cast that also includes Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Charlize Theron and Lupita Nyong'o.
The film opened at number one globally and held the top position for two consecutive weekends. Its reported production budget was $250 million, excluding marketing.
Nolan wrote, directed and produced the film, with Emma Thomas also serving as producer. The result lifts the combined worldwide gross of Nolan's films above $7 billion.
“The Odyssey” is the third Universal Pictures release to cross $1 billion worldwide in 2026, alongside “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” and the Michael Jackson biopic “Michael.”
