The United Nations said on September 25, 2026 that expanding fighting in northern Ethiopia was obstructing humanitarian operations, with road closures interrupting planned aid movements and armed groups seizing humanitarian vehicles in parts of Amhara.
Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric urged the parties to allow relief agencies to reach people safely. UN agencies and their partners were continuing work in Tigray, Amhara and Afar wherever security permitted, while assessing emergency needs, according to a UN News report republished by Global Issues.
The UN warned that the escalation could deepen existing needs, including among people displaced by earlier fighting. Dujarric also expressed concern about reports of drone use and harm to civilians, and called for restraint and dialogue.
UN Horn of Africa envoy Guang Cong was working with national and regional interlocutors, the African Union and IGAD to support renewed dialogue under the November 2022 peace agreement, the report said.
