The United States and South Korea will end their annual Ulchi Freedom Shield military exercise six days earlier than planned, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.

The command exercise, which began on Monday, will now conclude on Friday, August 21, at the request of the United States. Separate live field-training activities conducted alongside it will also be partially reduced, with the two militaries still determining the details.

A Pentagon official confirmed that the United States was substantially scaling back the joint exercises. South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun told lawmakers that Seoul’s officials had not known in advance about President Donald Trump’s direction to reduce US participation.

Trump said on Sunday that he was unhappy with the exercise, calling it costly and hostile toward North Korea while referring to his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Reports that Trump is interested in another meeting with Kim have added diplomatic significance to the unexpected change.

The United States has maintained troops in South Korea since the 1953 armistice that halted the Korean War. Large joint exercises are central to the alliance’s military readiness and are routinely criticized by North Korea. Previous cancellations or reductions were generally agreed before drills began, making this mid-exercise change unusual.
