The US Supreme Court on Monday, August 17, rejected for a second time President Donald Trump’s effort to overturn the 2023 civil verdict in E Jean Carroll’s case, leaving a $5 million judgment intact.

The court listed Trump’s petition under “rehearings denied” in an unsigned order and gave no explanation. The justices had declined in June to hear his appeal, after which his lawyers asked them to reconsider.

A federal jury found Trump liable in 2023 for sexually abusing Carroll and later defaming her. Trump has repeatedly denied Carroll’s allegations. A federal appeals court upheld the verdict in 2024.

Trump deposited the award and interest in a court-controlled account after the verdict. Following the Supreme Court’s initial refusal to take the case, a federal judge ordered the money released; Carroll’s legal team said about $5.6 million had been disbursed to her.

A separate $83.3 million defamation judgment against Trump remains the subject of another appeal. A federal appeals court upheld that award in September 2025, and the Supreme Court is expected to consider whether to act on the appeal later in 2026.
