- Abiy Ahmed attended the Lamu refinery groundbreaking in Kenya on 30 September 2026, saying the project could broaden Ethiopia’s regional fuel supply options and support trade.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed joined Kenyan President William Ruto and other African leaders at a groundbreaking ceremony for the Lamu refinery in Kenya on 30 September 2026, highlighting the project’s potential to broaden Ethiopia’s fuel supply options.
Fana Media Corporation reported that Abiy linked the refinery to East African economic integration and opportunities for regional trade and investment. Ethiopian News Agency separately reported his view that it could provide Ethiopia with another regional source of refined petroleum.
The ceremony was also reported by Deutsche Welle, which identified Abiy, Ruto and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni among the participating leaders. The event marked a development stage for the proposed refinery, rather than the start of fuel production.
In his remarks, Abiy argued that refining more fuel within Africa could reduce exposure to disruptions in overseas supply chains, according to ENA. Fana reported that he also encouraged African investors and businesses to support industrial projects on the continent.
For Ethiopia, the significance described by Abiy is the prospect of a wider choice of regional suppliers. The reports cited here do not establish an Ethiopian fuel-purchase agreement or an allocation of refinery output to Ethiopia. Those remain separate questions from participation in the groundbreaking ceremony.
