Ethiopia’s House of Peoples’ Representatives re-elected Abiy Ahmed as prime minister on October 5, 2026, as the new parliamentary term opened with changes to the leadership of both legislative houses.

Fana Media Corporation reported that Abiy was sworn in for a new five-year term. The Reporter independently reported his re-election at the House’s inaugural session, saying he had been nominated by the ruling Prosperity Party following its parliamentary majority in the June election.

In a separate report on the same day’s proceedings, The Reporter said Ahmed Shide, who had served as finance minister, became speaker of the House of Peoples’ Representatives, succeeding Tagesse Chafo.

Muferiat Kamil, previously minister of labor and skills, took over as speaker of the House of Federation from Agegnehu Teshager, according to the newspaper. It also reported that former Sidama regional president Desta Ledamo became deputy speaker of that house.

The appointments bring officials from ministerial and regional leadership positions into senior parliamentary roles at the start of the new government’s term. The reports cited here do not set out a full cabinet lineup.
