Addis Ababa’s City Council unanimously reappointed Adanech Abiebie as mayor on 30 September 2026, according to Fana Media Corporation and the Ethiopian News Agency.
The decision came at the opening session of the fourth Addis Ababa City Council. ENA placed the meeting at the Adwa Victory Memorial. Addis Media Network, the city’s public broadcaster, also reported the reappointment and her swearing-in.
Adanech outlined priorities including improving residents’ livelihoods, modernizing municipal services, expanding economic opportunities and advancing digital transformation, Fana reported. Her remarks set out an agenda for the new term; the available reports did not establish a delivery timetable or funding allocations for those priorities.
ENA said council members cited her administrative experience and work on infrastructure and city services in explaining their support. Those assessments reflect the council’s account of her previous tenure.
The vote keeps Adanech at the head of the capital’s administration as the new council begins its work.
