The 21-year-old also became the first player from the Philippines to win a WTA Tour-level singles trophy. The final began on Sunday after a weather delay and was suspended overnight, with Eala trailing by a set but leading 2-1 in the second.
When play resumed in Washington, Eala won 10 of the next 13 games. She levelled the match and then swept the deciding set against Pegula, the world No. 3 and a two-time former champion at the tournament.
The victory extended Eala's winning streak against top-10 opponents to five matches. She is expected to rise to a career-high world ranking of No. 20 when the next WTA rankings are released.
