Andrew Flintoff has stepped down as head coach of the England Lions with immediate effect, ending a tenure that began in September 2024.
The England and Wales Cricket Board announced the change on Friday, August 7, 2026. Flintoff said he had enjoyed working with the country's leading young cricketers and took pride in their development, but had decided to leave because he could not fully commit to the role.
The former England all-rounder is due to work with Sydney Thunder in Australia's Big Bash League during the coming winter. Television work and family commitments also contributed to his decision, according to reports of the ECB announcement.
His departure comes shortly before a four-day match at Beckenham against Pakistan's Test squad. Mike Yardy, the England Under-19 head coach, will take charge of the Professional County Club Select XI assembled for that fixture.
Flintoff, 48, had previously been cleared to leave the Lions' planned South Africa tour early to begin his Big Bash League assignment. England men's team director Rob Key had publicly defended his work with the development side in the days before the announcement.
The Lions serve as England's second-string men's team and a pathway for players being prepared for senior international cricket. The ECB had not announced a permanent successor at the time of the coaching change.
