The result turned a difficult starting position into a home victory for Antonelli. An engine-related penalty had pushed him towards the back of the field, but he worked his way into contention during a 53-lap race interrupted by an early red flag, according to the FIA’s race report.
Antonelli then faced a second recovery after an additional pit stop dropped him to sixth. He caught Russell and made the decisive pass with three laps remaining, The Guardian reported. The published results put his winning margin at 3.875 seconds.
The victory made Antonelli the first Italian driver to win at Monza since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966. It also strengthened his championship position: The Guardian’s post-race standings showed him on 267 points, 66 ahead of Russell.
