Brandon McNulty won the elite men’s road race at the UCI Road World Championships in Montreal on September 27, 2026, ending a 33-year wait for an American winner of the event.
The 28-year-old finished alone after attacking with just over 30 kilometres remaining, according to the Guardian’s race report. Australia’s Michael Matthews took silver, 13 seconds behind, while Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands finished third.
McNulty began the final lap with an advantage of about 50 seconds. A late pursuit involving Britain’s Tom Pidcock narrowed the gap, but the American held on to win.

McNulty became the country’s first elite men’s road race world champion since 1993.
His success concluded the championships’ week of competition in Montreal and gave the United States the title in the men’s road race, which is contested by national teams.
