The Argentine won 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 against the ninth-seeded American in New York, according to the tournament’s official match report.
Fritz took control early, building a 3-0 lead in the opening set before winning the first two sets. Cerundolo reversed the contest by taking the next three, ending the home player’s singles campaign in the third round.
The victory was Cerundolo’s second consecutive five-set match at this year’s tournament. He had also needed the deciding set to get past Jan-Lennard Struff in the second round two days earlier.
The US Open described the comeback as only the second time in Cerundolo’s career that he had won after losing the opening two sets. It extended his best run at the event and earned him a place in the last 16.
