Ethio Telecom’s board has named Tariku Demissie acting chief executive, The Reporter reported on October 18, 2026, following Frehiwot Tamiru’s move to lead Ethiopia’s Ministry of Innovation and Technology.

Tariku previously held the company’s chief infrastructure officer role, according to the Ethiopian newspaper. His appointment places an existing member of the operator’s senior management in charge during the leadership transition.

Frehiwot had headed the state-owned telecommunications company for eight years, The Reporter said. The change at Ethio Telecom follows her appointment to the cabinet earlier in October.

The newspaper’s brief report did not specify when Tariku’s appointment took effect, how long the acting assignment would last, or a timetable for selecting a permanent chief executive.
