Ethiopia and Djibouti announce Damerjog–Dewele fuel pipeline project

Ethiopia and Djibouti announced a project on September 24, 2026, to connect Damerjog in Djibouti with Dewele in Ethiopia by a pipeline carrying refined petroleum products, with storage terminals at both ends, according to Fana Media Corporation.

Fana reported that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed made the announcement alongside Djiboutian President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh. The project would add a dedicated fuel transport link between the two countries.

In advance of the announcement, Djibouti’s Agence Djiboutienne d’Information reported on September 23 that the leaders were scheduled to lay the foundation stone for a petroleum storage terminal at Damerjog Industrial Park on September 24. ADI put the terminal’s planned storage capacity at 375,000 cubic metres, with capacity to handle five million tonnes of petroleum products annually. It described the facility as the starting point for a planned 120-kilometre pipeline supplying the Ethiopian market, and said the terminal would connect to the Damerjog–Nagad railway and Damerjog’s liquid-bulk port. The intended benefits include easing pressure on roads and reducing interruptions to fuel supplies, according to ADI.
