Fana Media Corporation reported her victory, while a September 14 report by Agence de Presse Africaine independently identified Amebaw as the winner of the September 13 race and recorded her time as 14 minutes 30.36 seconds.
Amebaw entered the competition as the year’s fastest woman over the distance. World Athletics’ September 9 preview listed her world-leading performance of 14:18.41, set in Rome on June 4, and placed her among six Ethiopian contenders in the 12-woman field.
Her victory followed a second-place finish at the Diamond League Final in Brussels, where compatriot Freweyni Hailu won and Senayet Getachew finished third, according to the same World Athletics preview. The Budapest title gives Amebaw a season-ending championship success after that Ethiopian sweep in Brussels.
