Ethiopia earned $128.3 million from livestock exports in the 2018 Ethiopian fiscal year, according to the Livestock Development Institute, as officials outlined plans to increase use of the country’s export abattoirs.
Fana reported the figure on September 6, 2026. An Ethiopian News Agency report dated September 4, 2026, attributed the same total to institute Director General Asrat Tera, who spoke at a forum bringing together livestock suppliers and processors.
Asrat said the country’s 12 export abattoirs were operating at about 10 percent of their combined annual capacity of 200,000 metric tons. He identified livestock supply constraints as the main obstacle and said the government aimed to raise capacity utilization to 50 percent in the 2019 Ethiopian fiscal year.
The institute described earnings of at least $1 billion as potential for the sector. That figure is an ambition, rather than recorded revenue.
ENA also reported a pilot arrangement allowing suppliers in the Somali Region and Borana to deliver animals directly to export facilities. The exporters’ association said it would assess the arrangement and consider further logistics and financing support.
