FA charges Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert over three ‘Spygate’ cases
The Football Association has charged Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert with three misconduct breaches linked to the club’s observation of rival training sessions between December 2025 and May 2026.
The Football Association charged Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, with three alleged breaches of its misconduct rules arising from the club’s “Spygate” affair.
The FA said each charge relates to Rule E3.1 and concerns conduct between December 2025 and May 2026. Eckert has until Tuesday, July 28, 2026, to respond. The charges remain allegations and no sanction has yet been announced.
The action is separate from the English Football League proceedings that already punished Southampton as a club. The Saints were removed from the 2025-26 Championship play-offs and handed a four-point deduction for the 2026-27 season after admitting that staff observed training sessions involving Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough.
An independent disciplinary panel previously found that Eckert authorised the operation. Its written reasons said junior staff had been used to gather information from opponents’ sessions. Eckert later accepted responsibility for the conduct and Southampton retained him as head coach.
Wednesday’s FA decision moves the case from an investigation into formal disciplinary proceedings against Eckert personally. The next step is his response to the three charges; any penalty would follow the association’s disciplinary process.
