Ingebrigtsen wins Ultimate Championship 5,000m in 12:59.24

Jakob Ingebrigtsen won the men’s 5,000 metres at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest on 11 September 2026, finishing in 12 minutes 59.24 seconds ahead of Cole Hocker.

The Norwegian accelerated off the final bend to settle the race. World Athletics’ report confirmed the winning time and the victory over Hocker, while The Guardian reported that Ingebrigtsen covered the final lap in 54.39 seconds and earned $150,000.

The result marked a successful return to a major international podium after an Achilles injury disrupted Ingebrigtsen’s preparations. According to The Guardian, he said he had only been able to step up his training in July and had gained confidence from his recent races.

The victory came on the opening evening of the new championship. It adds a race result to the build-up to the Budapest meeting, which brings leading track and field athletes together across three days of competition.
