Jackson Koivun wins 3M Open in third professional start
Jackson Koivun finished 25 under par to beat world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler by three strokes in Minnesota, earning his first PGA Tour title in only his third start as a professional.
Jackson Koivun won his first PGA Tour title on Sunday, July 26, holding off world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler to claim the 3M Open by three strokes in Blaine, Minnesota.
The 21-year-old American closed with a five-under-par 66 at TPC Twin Cities and finished the tournament at 25 under. Scheffler produced a bogey-free final-round 63 to take second place at 22 under.
Koivun protected his lead under pressure as Scheffler made three consecutive birdies to start the back nine and added further birdies at the 16th and 18th holes. Koivun responded with a birdie of his own at the 16th, restoring a three-shot advantage with two holes remaining.
The victory came in Koivun’s third PGA Tour start since turning professional. Less than two months earlier, he helped Auburn win its second NCAA team championship in three years. He completed the final 36 holes in Minnesota without a bogey.
Denny McCarthy, Brian Harman, Chandler Phillips and Hideki Matsuyama shared third place at 20 under. Defending champion Kurt Kitayama tied for 24th at 13 under.
