The 24-year-old Italian said in a statement released through tournament organizers that he made the decision after consulting his doctors and team. He said the knee continued to trouble him despite treatment and that he was not ready to compete.
Cincinnati begins on Thursday, August 13. It is one of the principal hard-court tournaments before the U.S. Open, which starts in New York on August 30.
Sinner had also missed the Montreal Masters while prioritizing his health. His withdrawal from Cincinnati follows that of world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, who has been dealing with a wrist injury.
The five-time Grand Slam champion last competed in July, when he retained his Wimbledon title by defeating Alexander Zverev. He had arrived at the North American hard-court swing after winning six consecutive Masters 1000-level tournaments.
The injury now places added focus on Sinner’s recovery timetable, with three weeks remaining before the final Grand Slam tournament of the season begins.
