Koysha Hydropower Project Seeks €500 Million to Reach Completion

Ethiopia’s Koysha Hydroelectric Project needs an additional €500 million to reach completion, according to Ethiopian Electric Power’s annual performance briefing reported on August 29, 2026.
The 2,200-megawatt project on the Omo River is 77 percent complete. EEP chief executive Ashebir Balcha said the utility has authorization to seek external commercial credit and has reached an agreement with Italian banks for €400 million, while EEP plans to provide the remaining €100 million from its own revenue.
Construction is now targeted for completion in 2027, with initial generation planned for 2028 and full operation in 2029. The project, under construction since 2016, is designed to generate as much as 6,460 gigawatt-hours a year.
EEP also reported that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam generated 18.3 terawatt-hours during the 2018 Ethiopian fiscal year, accounting for 52 percent of national electricity output. The utility said total generation rose 21 percent and foreign-exchange earnings from power increased 27 percent to $475.7 million.
