Semenyo’s second goal extended the lead after the break. Brobbey completed his hat-trick to bring Sunderland back within one goal, before Erling Haaland scored late to settle the match. Haaland’s goal was initially ruled offside before a video review overturned that decision, according to the Guardian’s match report.
The result gave City five wins from their opening five league matches. They enter the international break ahead of Arsenal, who lost 3–0 at Brighton on 19 September 2026. City’s attacking return secured the points, although Sunderland’s three goals exposed defensive problems for Enzo Maresca’s side.
