Tadej Pogačar wins fifth Tour de France title to equal record
Tadej Pogačar claimed his fifth Tour de France title and third in succession, joining four riders at the top of the race’s all-time winners list.
Tadej Pogačar won the 2026 Tour de France on July 26, securing his fifth overall title and drawing level with the race’s record holders.
The 27-year-old Slovenian became the fifth rider to win the Tour five times, joining Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Induráin. It was also Pogačar’s third consecutive Tour victory.
Pogačar finished almost six and a half minutes ahead in the general classification after taking five stages during the three-week race. His UAE Team Emirates-XRG teammate Isaac del Toro finished third, while Remco Evenepoel placed second.
Mathieu van der Poel won the final stage in Paris, narrowly holding off the pursuing sprinters on the Champs-Élysées after breaking clear with Pogačar on the last ascent of Montmartre. It was Van der Poel’s second stage victory of the 2026 Tour.
Pogačar’s fifth title places him one victory short of becoming the Tour’s sole record holder. The race was held amid extreme heat and wildfires, and several leading contenders, including Jonas Vingegaard, did not finish after crashes.
Pogačar is expected to compete in the Vuelta a España in August, seeking the only one of cycling’s three Grand Tours he has not yet won.
