Britain’s business secretary, Jonathan Reynolds, ruled out a bailout to protect jobs at Jaguar Land Rover on September 6, 2026, while leaving open the possibility of government support for long-term investment.

Speaking on the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme, Reynolds said discussions should focus on the carmaker’s competitiveness and ways to reduce job losses. His comments were reported by The Guardian and PA Media.

JLR has confirmed that it is opening a voluntary redundancy programme for salaried and management employees. Reports that as many as 4,000 roles could go over two years remain a reported estimate rather than a confirmed final total.

Reynolds is due to meet company leaders and the Unite union to discuss the planned reductions. The Guardian reported that talks with chief executive PB Balaji and Unite general secretary Sharon Graham were scheduled for September 8, 2026.
