Romell Glave wins European 100m title as Britain takes gold and silver

Romell Glave won the European men’s 100 metres title in Birmingham on August 11, 2026, leading a British one-two as Jeremiah Azu took silver.

Glave crossed the line in 10.09 seconds, with Azu second in 10.16 and Germany’s Owen Ansah third in 10.19. A headwind slowed the field, but Glave held his form through the finish to claim the championship.

Italy’s Marcell Jacobs, the Tokyo Olympic champion and two-time defending European champion, pulled up during the final and finished in 12.26. He had earlier advanced from the semifinal in 10.08.

The result marked the third British gold-and-silver finish in the event at the European Championships, following one-twos in 1998 and 2018.

Glave, 26, was born in Jamaica and moved to London at 15. His victory followed several injury-disrupted seasons, including a back problem that kept him in a brace in 2022 and further trouble after he won European bronze in 2024.

Elsewhere on the second day of the championships, Italy’s Nadia Battocletti won the women’s 5,000 metres, while Dutch hurdler Nadine Visser edged Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska by one-thousandth of a second in the women’s 100-metre hurdles final.
