Tirante Stuns Djokovic in Three Sets at Cincinnati Open

Thiago Agustín Tirante produced the biggest victory of his career on August 15, defeating Novak Djokovic 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the Serbian’s opening match at the Cincinnati Open.

Djokovic controlled the first set but struggled physically as the heat and humidity intensified. He received attention from medical staff during the second set and was unable to sustain his early level as Tirante forced the deciding set.

The 25-year-old Argentine, ranked No. 50, relied on a strong serve and aggressive forehand to keep Djokovic under pressure and complete the upset. The result improved Tirante’s record against top-10 opponents to four wins from five matches.

Djokovic said after the match that hot and humid conditions have aggravated a health issue in recent years. The 39-year-old had chosen Cincinnati as preparation for the US Open after reaching the Wimbledon semifinals in July.

The defeat leaves Djokovic without a quarterfinal appearance in his three non-Grand Slam tournaments this season. His record across Indian Wells, Rome and Cincinnati stands at two wins and three losses, while his results at major tournaments have remained considerably stronger.
