UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and Concacaf have escalated their dispute with FIFA president Gianni Infantino, pressing for his resignation after a failed proposal to sell an interest in the World Cup.
In a joint open letter reported on August 10, 2026, the confederations accused Infantino of breaking trust and said FIFA had treated the controversy as a communication failure rather than acknowledging a failure of judgment. They also called for an independent review conducted by a body outside football.
The dispute centres on the Football Forward Enterprise proposal, which the confederations say was launched without proper collective approval. Preliminary discussions about alternative competitions have begun amid UEFA threats to boycott FIFA events, according to the Guardian. The next immediate pressure point could be the under-20 women’s World Cup, where European participation is uncertain.
The three confederations are also considering possible candidates ahead of FIFA’s next presidential election. Concacaf president Victor Montagliani is reported to be among the potential contenders. However, support within national associations is mixed, while the African and South American confederations have backed Infantino.
