U.S. sets 29 September bans on selected Canadian dairy, alcohol and motorcycles

The United States announced on 8 September 2026 that it will ban selected Canadian dairy products, alcoholic beverages and motorcycles from 29 September, expanding its trade restrictions on Canada.

Presidential proclamations set the start at 12:01 a.m. eastern time on 29 September 2026. The measures replace additional tariffs with import exclusions for the products specified in their annexes. They do not constitute a ban on all Canadian imports. The White House justified the measures by alleging continued Canadian discrimination against U.S. commerce. Its dairy proclamation says the existing 50% additional duty will still apply to affected products imported before the deadline but not yet entered for consumption.

The announcement followed Canada's implementation of retaliatory tariffs on about US$20 billion in American goods earlier on 8 September. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said his government would accelerate efforts to reduce economic dependence on the United States. AP reported that trade representatives remained in contact.
