Six US senators urged Secretary of State Marco Rubio on September 28, 2026 to step up diplomatic engagement with Ethiopia’s federal government, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front and associated armed groups to stop renewed fighting and return to mediation.
The appeal was issued by Cory Booker and joined by Jeanne Shaheen, Chris Coons, Jeff Merkley, Chris Van Hollen and Tim Kaine, according to a statement published by Booker’s office. Addis Standard’s report on the appeal was carried by AllAfrica on September 29.
The senators warned that renewed hostilities threatened the African Union-brokered agreement that ended the 2020–2022 Tigray war. They called on Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and TPLF leaders to reduce tensions.
They also criticised the Trump administration for allowing sanctions to expire, arguing that the decision weakened accountability. That assessment was part of the senators’ appeal.
The statement adds a congressional call for diplomatic action; it does not announce a new mediation agreement or a change in US policy.
