The Vuelta a España has shortened its September 6, 2026 stage from Palma del Río to Córdoba to 110.2 kilometres because of forecast high temperatures, removing 79.5 kilometres from the planned route.
In a statement issued on September 5, race organisers said the decision followed activation of the Extreme Temperatures Protocol and a meeting involving representatives of the riders, teams, commissaires and race management. The stage had originally been scheduled to cover 189.7 kilometres.
The change is intended to protect riders’ health while preserving suitable racing conditions. The Guardian reported that temperatures above 40C were expected and that the route alteration would take effect from kilometre 52.
The announcement followed Marco Brenner’s victory on September 5 in stage 14, from Jaén to Sierra de la Pandera. The German rider beat Santiago Buitrago by one second after their duel on the final ascent. Tudor Pro Cycling confirmed that the result was the team’s first Grand Tour stage victory.
Enric Mas retained the overall lead after the mountain stage. According to The Guardian’s race report, Felix Gall moved into second place, 2 minutes 6 seconds behind Mas, while Primoz Roglic dropped to third.
