Google expands Android age-assurance signals to developers worldwide

Google is expanding its Play Age Signals API to Android developers worldwide, offering apps a way to adjust services according to a user’s age range while limiting the personal information shared with developers.

The technology is designed to provide age-related signals rather than a user’s exact date of birth. Developers can use those signals to tailor app features and content for different age groups.

The worldwide rollout extends age-assurance tools through Google Play as governments and technology companies face growing pressure to improve protections for younger users. The approach also highlights the trade-off facing platforms: verifying whether users are old enough for certain experiences while minimising the collection and disclosure of sensitive identity data.

Implementation will depend on how individual developers use the API and how consistently age signals are available across markets. Google’s expansion gives Android app makers a common platform-level mechanism for building age-aware experiences.
